At SEEK Engineering, it is always fun to design a 30 km temporary water transfer. We’ve had the privilege of witnessing first-hand the evolution of engineering solutions for temporary water transfer projects over the last two decades. About 18 years ago, designing a temporary water transfer system was an enormous logistical challenge, particularly due to a shortage of high-head rental pumps in the market. To overcome this, we would often need to deploy 21 to 27 pumps in a single project, using inline pumps to compensate for market constraints.
Back then, every project demanded creative problem-solving and immense manpower. Through sheer determination and innovation, hard-working North Americans managed to deliver results by increasing the number of inline pumps and making the most of available resources. However, the costs associated with fuel consumption, frequent repairs, and pump maintenance were substantial.
Today, the landscape of water transfer engineering has drastically changed. Continuous advancements in pump design and manufacturing now allow for more efficient, specialized equipment. This evolution has reduced the number of pumps required for large-scale projects, resulting in significant cost savings in various aspects:
- Lower fuel consumption: Modern pumps are far more energy-efficient, lowering operational costs.
- Reduced repairs and maintenance: Better designs and materials ensure greater reliability and durability, meaning less downtime and fewer repairs.
- Lower life cycle cost: By cutting down on equipment and energy usage, clients experience reduced overall life cycle costs.
At SEEK Engineering, we take pride in implementing a holistic approach to achieve these goals. Our focus is not just on the immediate task at hand but also on long-term sustainability and cost efficiency. We specialize in a wide range of services, including:
- Sewer bypass
- River diversion
- Groundwater control
- Deep-well dewatering
- Well-point dewatering
