Dredging is the art of cleaning out the mud, sand, silt particles from river bed or water pond using the waters’ centrifugal force. Generally a submersible pump or an auger is used to stir the mud / sand at the bottom of the river.

The centrifugal pump creates a negative pressure differential and transports water and sand to the surface which is further pumped out to the shore or on a barge or you can preciously place the dredged material creating a manmade island for example “The Palm Jebel Ali”(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNI7CLAmYDU).
However, the application of dredging is not limited to making islands. As you see in the picture above SEEK ENGINEERING designed and assisted in the execution of dredging a turbine intake in Northern Alberta . Electricity is the heart of modern society. Power generation plants harness the potential energy in water and generate electricity. During this process, the fluid velocity of water transports sand and silt to the turbine intake. If not dredged periodically the sand / silt can cause considerable damage to the turbine blades and change the profile of the turbine blades leading to cavitation, low efficiency and premature turbine failure. Professional Engineers at team SEEK studied particle size, drag forces, settling time, specific gravity including various other factors and proposed the ideal pump for the application.

High abrasive handling hose was specified to handle the sand / silt in the water. A diver was used to maneuver the pump and check for final results.
